Shipping a motorhome is not the same job as shipping a car, and pricing it as though it were is the most common reason quotations from elsewhere fall apart. Motorhomes are tall, long and often over three and a half tonnes, which limits which decks they can travel on and which vessels will accept them. A three-metre-high coachbuilt cannot go on a standard car deck at all; it needs a high-clearance deck, and there are only a limited number of those on each sailing.

Habitation vehicles carry gas, water, leisure batteries and fitted furniture, all of which need attention before a sea voyage. Gas bottles must be turned off, disconnected and in most cases removed entirely; some carriers require a purge certificate. Fresh and waste water tanks should be drained, the fridge emptied and propped open, and every locker, drawer and roof light latched shut so nothing moves in a swell.

Biosecurity matters more for motorhomes than for any other vehicle type, because destinations such as Australia and New Zealand inspect them forensically. Soil in the wheel arches, seeds in the awning, insect nests in vents, food residue in cupboards and dirty outdoor equipment all trigger cleaning orders and quarantine fees at your cost. Good paperwork is what keeps freight moving, so we front-load it. For commercial cargo we need a commercial invoice and packing list, your EORI number, the commodity codes and the incoterms you have agreed with your buyer. For vehicles we need the V5C or bill of sale, photographic identification for the owner and the keys. For personal effects we need a detailed inventory and, where relevant, evidence of residence.

If anything is missing we will tell you exactly what to obtain and where to get it. We would far rather spend ten minutes on the phone before the cargo moves than deal with a detention charge at destination because a certificate was never applied for.

Standard carrier liability is limited by international convention and is calculated on the weight of the cargo rather than its value, which means an expensive, lightweight shipment is barely protected at all. We therefore recommend all-risks marine cargo insurance on the declared commercial or replacement value of every consignment, which we can arrange at the point of booking for a small percentage of the insured value.
